Pre thru K - We just read Goodnight Moon and practiced our counting.  Then, students did their own bilingual story about counting an object.
Ask your student to count forward and backward from 1-10 in Spanish and share some songs they are learning.

1-4th -  We recently read Cha- Cha- Cha en la selva (in the jungle), Salta, Ranita, Salta (Jump, Frog) and The Umbrella - La Sombrilla
Students have put written about and illustrated their favorite parts, or recommendations they have about the Jungle.  When you are in school, check out the Spanish bulletin board.  It's a jungle out there!

6th-7th graders.... reviewing verbs, particularly stem changing verbs.  There will be a short quiz next Fri.

1-4 grade work graces our bulletin with a cycle of learning Spanish through effective story making.

5th-8th - We are excited that every child will have access to a text book and work book to ensure their progress through the Spanish curriculum.  Books will be available for check out through the Business Office.

5-7th Grades

The first draft of the Hispanic Project were due last Friday.  With the middle school trip, some are still trickling in.
Some students are ready to present theirs and others will make some recommended revisions.

Our first assessments are coming up.  There are several tiers in MS Spanish.

Beginning students should practice answering basic questions and the alphabet.  USE THE AUDIO!  http://www.classzone.com/cz/books/avancemos_1/get_chapter_group.htm?cin=1&rg=online_review&at=flashcards&var=flashcards

Continuing students have been working on greeting dialogues informal and formal.  They can do the first three self-quizzes.  http://www.classzone.com/cz/books/avancemos_1/get_resource.htm?ci=9&rg=online_review&at=self_check_quizzes

1-4th Grades

We have reviewed numbers, colors and learned some new fruit and insects.  Students should be able to answer (and possibly ask):
¿Dónde está la manzana?  Aquí está la manzana.   (Where is the apple?  Here is the apple.)
¿De qué color es la manzana?  La manzana es roja.  (What color is the apple?  The apple is red.)

Look for your child to be bringing home his or her story this week about the hungry caterpillar.  Please have them read it to you and give them a compliment.  ¡Fantástico!

Project- First Draft Due Friday.

There are several goals to this project.

First, all of us are researchers and teachers.  Students are picking a notable Hispanic to research and report back to other students.

We are also examining how to get information into Spanish.  Relevant, helpful usage of Google Translate is discussed.  Making sure information in projects is comprehensible for our classmates is also important.

As always, perfección is not required.  But we want to get the proyecto en español y aumentar el vocabulario.
English, Español, Spanglish, Inglañol...  It's all good!

Extreme Schooling

How does it feel not to understand anything in a language?

This article gives a great insight to how it might feel if you are suddenly put in a total immersion setting and have to function.  It helps to understand how hard it is to learn a language and be patient with ourselves and others who are learning.

1-4th grades are bringing home some beginning homework.  They are supposed to share it at home.  Parents should give a compliment and sign homework.  And students should bring it back.  We will put it in their portfolio folder at school.

Next week we will have some informal assessments- no need to study!  We have gone over colors and adjective placement and agreement.  We are looking for individual progress, not a comparison to other students.

5th grades and up have a prueba.  In English, literally, that means "proof" (proof of learning), not so literally, it means "quiz."

Attached is the study guide.
